Description
Roy Wagner's paper, 'Are there Social Groups in the New Guinea Highlands', questions the integrity of social groups in non-Western contexts. Often, when we find such groups it is the result of a tendency when hearing indigenous names and terms, 'to assume that these distinctions are descriptions or definitions of concrete, bounded, and empirically existing groups.' (Wagner 1974:106). Instead, among the Daribi, among whom Wagner conducted fieldwork, ' ... names may be said to "elicit" social collectivities in the act of distinguishing them' (ibid.108). Consequently, when it comes to indigenous names and terms that serve to distinguish some from others, The term 'Para' provides an example.
